Handle Problems (2010-06-10)
Beautiful style. Problems with the handle may be caused by heat or flame coming up the side of the pot while brewing. The bottom diameter of the base is very short and the stove or range eye circumference may be much larger than the bottom of the maker causing heat, or even flame with gas eyes, to travel up the side of the maker damaging the handle. This is a disadvantage particularly for gas burning eyes. Nice looking and well threaded piece of equiptment.

Excellent alternative to Bialetti (2009-05-01)
I must get something out of the way first:

The reviewers who griped about the handle breaking must not have read the instructions, which clearly state to NOT tighten the top using the handle. The handle on both my coffee pots (I own both the small and large versions) have worked perfectly well for the six or more months I've owned them. There is nothing wrong with either the design or use of these pots that a little common sense wouldn't have fixed, and it's a shame to see such a wonderful product unfairly reviewed.

Okay, with the air cleared, I'll move on to the review:

I have owned and used a Bialetti aluminum stovetop "Moka" pot for years. Bialetti's pots are just fine, but the untreated aluminum discolors and stains easily.

Keep in mind, a stovetop espresso pot will give you percolated espresso (if you use espresso roast coffee) which is not the same as a traditional espresso shot, like what you'd get from Starbucks. Frankly, I think it tastes better, but it is different, and there's little or no "crema" with a percolated espresso.

If you move to Bodum's pots from Bialetti, as I did, you will immediately notice how the fit and finish of these pots is clean and precise. Screwing the top to the bottom is silky smooth (unlike the Bialetti that can squeak and chatter). The gasket that forms the seal between top and bottom appears to be made of black silicone, and remains springy and supple even after all the months of daily use I've given it. (Bodum includes a replacement gasket in the box, but I can't imagine when I'll need to replace it.) The gasket with the Bialetti is white, and appears to be made of rubber, and will discolor the first time you use it, and goes on to form tiny cracks fairly quickly.

When you make a pot of percolated espresso, "low and slow" is the general rule. Fill the stainless steel filter basket, but do not overfill and DO NOT pack the grains down. You will want to use only a percolated grind, which is a grind roughly the size of "Sugar in the Raw" granules. To use anything finer will result in clogging of the filters, grains of coffee in the top pot (and in your cup) as well as down into the water reservoir.

Fill the bottom reservoir with water up to the max fill line. Make sure there are no grains of coffee on the lip of the basket. Sit the basket down into the reservoir, and screw the top on to the bottom (ahem... and do not use the handle to tighten, per my opening rant!) Tighten it fairly tight - you want a good solid seal - but don't over-tighten. Too loose, and the pressure of the boiling water cannot come up and into the top carafe.

Set you heat fairly low. The coffee will start to flow silently and slowly at first. The trick seems to be to immediately turn off the heat once water is exhausted and the perc head is hissing and bubbling a bit; the coffee will be about 1/4 inch from the bottom opening of the perc head.

Cleanup is a breeze. Disassemble your pot when it's cool. Use something plastic (a bic pen cap works perfectly) to remove the silicone gasket. Clean everything with warm sudsy water and dry. Or put it in the dishwasher. (Something you can't do with Bialetti.)

Keep in mind...

If you have your coffee ground at Starbucks or Peet's, remember to make a point of explaining that you need a Percolator (or "Moka Pot") grind. You definitely do NOT want the typical espresso dust type of grind, or you will not enjoy your Chambord!

I have zero regrets with either of my Bodum Chambord espresso pots, and highly recommend them to everyone. I hope some of this was useful to you. ENJOY!

Careful use rewards (2008-12-13)
Works great. Don't even think about trying to screw or unscrew it using the handle. The handle will break.

I paid $20.00 for this but it is still fabulous! (2010-06-19)
Having owned one of these before - I kept the flame on the gas stove low, and used Vanilla Macadamia Nut coarse coffee grind as my first attempt. It was delicious! I also add a lot of cream and Zsweet (sugar replacement) and it was very delicious. I had bought the instant packets of coffee earlier for days when I have to rush to work, but after making it today - I don't think I will be using those packets anymore. I made this today before work and it took just a few mintues - maybe 2 or 3minutes for the water (I used my filtered water) to percolate to the top (flame at very low) and coffee made perfect! Wow! I paid $20.00 for this at K-mart - the IMUSA brand and I should have checked with Amazon first as they are selling it for half the price, but I am still so glad I bought it at even double the price.
Love this coffee. I pour my coffee in the irish coffee cups you can get at Bed Bath and Beyond - small glass cups and just top with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Yum!
You have to watch the coffee closely - it suddenly sort of just "Perced" up and I quickly turned it off and it was ready. I also was careful to let the plastic handle avoid the flames, and it was not even hot to touch when the coffee quickly percolated.
Very rich bodied coffee, but I don't like to drink it strong like espresso - I add tons of cream to it.
Remember - the number of cups are in "espresso" cup size. Imagine Kona coffee or Coconut coffee. Wow.

just tested few times today yet able to create a krema!! beautiful! (2010-06-28)
oh I waited long time to get this in my hands. and I feel ok to say it was worth it.

but to be honest, i wasnt really satisfied with a exterior condition. i found few dents on the top side. yet it was clean inside, so i wouldnt mind thoes dents. 2ndly grip was bit lose, im still worrying if it'll be broken someday.

ok the 1st try, i failed to fix the valve well(i didnt know how to), so it leaked a bit. but smells GREAT!

2nd try, i succeed to create a kreama(not much though) but no leak.

3rd try, i added milk instead of just water, result? baeutiful! there wasnt any trouble to make a good cup of latte. kreama was really really beautiful! you should have seen it!

Im looking forward to have a cup of coffee next morning.

conclusion; it is effective, FAST! (only take 2mins), easy to clean up! can create a kreama(this is a big deal).

I used to have this old old vintage espresso maker, and i was happy with it. but once i got the brikka, oh...yes i understand why are so many ppl crazy bout this coffee maker. you can brew your own high quality coffee at your house. no more long line at coffee shop, no more screw up orders.

ps. i bought a 4 cups. and it can make a one cup ( not a mug!-not that big.) of coffee. if you're looking for an espresso, it can make 4 cups. but if you want to make a regular coffee, it can make one cup at a time.

Wonder how Brikka makes crema? Actually, it's a simple and neat trick at the nodule of the upper chamber from where the coffee comes out. Brikka has a metallic valve on the nodule that keeps the coffee from coming out until the pressure of the coffee from the bottom chamber becomes string enough to push up the valve.

Once the valve opens, the coffee comes out with a strong pressure going through the narrow exit of the nodule. This makes the similar effect of the espresso machine, and thus foams the crema.

How does it taste? It's by far superior than moka pot, or cheap espresso machine when you carefully follow the instruction that comes with Brikka. The crema is very smooth, and the coffee has the characteristic of espresso.

The instruction includes the careful measurement of water, strength of the stove flame, and shaking down the new Brikka for the first use. The crema is such a delicate matter, and you also have to be careful when you pour the coffee into the cup. All these things may sound too much work, but actually it's not bad at all after you get use to it. Washing Brikka may be more pain than the all in one espresso maker, but I cannot complain when given this good production of coffee, and brewing a good coffee in a traditional way is always fun.

The pot is made with aluminum. I saw some reviews that complained that it is not made from stainless steel, but I also heard most of the Italian makers say aluminum pots make better coffee, and I believe it is because of its high conductivity. This review is based on two-cup.

Good espresso maker - much better than aluminum! (2009-05-13)
I bought this to replace an old, cheap aluminum espresso maker, and I like it MUCH better. It's dishwasher safe, which is great, the handle is larger and easier to grasp, and it makes less of a mess when the pot is full and I'm trying to pour (for some reason, the aluminum one always sputtered a little when it was full, and I always got a little coffee on the stovetop). The instructions say not to pack the coffee, but that's what I always did with the old one, so that's what I've done with this one, and the coffee has been quite good.

The only complaint that I have is the length of time it takes to make the coffee (about 10 minutes), which is quite a bit longer than the aluminum one. I think part of that is because the bottom of this coffee maker isn't actually flat - the center portion of the bottom is recessed about 1/4 of an inch, so it doesn't come in contact with the heating element directly (making it heat slower). Not a big deal, but a little bit of an inconvenience. Overall, it was definitely a good purchase.

Great Stovetop Espresso Maker!! (2008-04-19)
This little espresso maker is excellent for making espresso drinks. It is so simple to use. Now I can have those pricey espresso drinks for a fraction of the cost!! And I can have that extra shot or two of espresso without the extra cost! It is very easy to use. It takes no time at all to make the espresso. Cleanup is a breeze. The pot is made of good quality stainless steel. This little pot will pay for itself in no time!! It is an excellent product at an excellent price.

The best stove top espresso maker yet (2007-12-16)
This was fantastic. Great quality stainless steel. It produces a smooth cup of espresso. I had the 'ever so popular' hex shape one and hated it. This pours perfectly unlike the other one which spills all over the place. You cannot go wrong with this. Great price, great quality.
